About Us

As a dietitian, I am passionate about health, and not "thinness". Dietitians teach people how to change their relationship with food and appreciate food for what it does for the body and mind.

We assist when a person is unable to enjoy food for whatever reason. It can be health related e.g. poor appetite, malabsorption, diet after surgery etc. It can also be because people have restricted themselves too long trying to lose weight unsuccessfully and have lost the ability to see food as a source of health. Dietitians are involved in sustained programmes and protocols that make sure there is enough food to eat (Food Security) as well as breastfeeding programmes.

We play a part in the food industry. Not only addressing health claims but informing the consumer on how to differentiate between healthy or less healthy choices. (Understanding the nutritional information on a label).

Menu and recipe planning in the corporate, mining and hospitality sectors are also part of dietetics. This includes the designing of normal and special diets making sure that the food provided meets the dietary needs of the recipients, that the food is safe to eat, and is produced in a way that meets the facility's financial and quality targets.

I have been involved in all of the above and I am committed to making nutrition realistic and fundamental for everyday life.

Services We Offer

I assist in menu planning, setting goals as well as changing poor eating habits. Every person is different and the information available is generalised. Seeing a dietitian brings perspective into the specific needs of a person. Many people know what to eat but very few people know how to incorporate healthy eating in their every day lives.

WEIGHT LOSS

Using Smart Goals to develop an action plan to lose weight.
Understanding food and labelling as well as the role the Food industry plays. Learning how to change one's relationship with food. Developing an energy-restricted diet plan and meal plan that suits the client.

Understanding that weight loss is not as easy for everyone. Understanding the role of Medicine and Surgery as a means of losing weight. Using Apps to control the energy intake as well as the Energy used.

DIABETES AND INSULIN RESISTANCE

Understanding blood sugar control as well as the role food plays in maintaining the blood sugar. Using the Glycemic Index as a tool to control appetite and blood sugar.

Understanding the role of medication, diet, exercise, and glucose testing to prevent further complications.
Using Apps to Control Blood sugar

CANCER

Focusing on superfoods that are high in antioxidants and wound healing properties.

Guidelines to combat symptoms related to treatment e.g. nausea, vomiting and poor appetite

DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhoea, gallbladder disease, chronic heartburn, ulcers

Post surgery: Guidelines on which foods to increase and avoid after digestive surgery.

KIDS HEALTH

Specific needs of kids are addressed such as
weight gain, weight loss or just teaching kids healthy eating to develop a good relationship with healthy foods.

Children have different needs and professionals are developing an increased awareness of sensory differences in children.

Parents have lost the confidence to differentiate between fussy eating or more serious eating problems. I help parents to set boundaries and to understand when to be strict or when to be lenient.

WEIGHT GAIN

Using a mind shift to learn to eat, especially with a poor appetite. Knowing what should be accepted with metabolism and what can be changed.

ALLERGIES AND FOOD INTOLERANCE

Learning to distinguish which foods to avoid and increase with allergies to prevent the diet from becoming depleted of essential nutrients when avoiding the allergen.
E.g. milk allergies, peanuts, gluten, wheat, soya etc.

Food Intolerance: Not all people test positive for an allergy but there would be related symptoms.
Using software apps to identify which foods are linked to a specific symptom.

CHOLESTEROL AND HYPERTENSION

Knowing how to protect the heart with food. Understanding which foods have protective and cholesterol-lowering properties.

HEALTHY MOM AND BABY

Breastfeeding, formula feeding, introduction of solids.
I have attended numerous breastfeeding courses and are aware of the fact that not all mothers find breastfeeding easy.
I was involved in the training of medical staff at Ellisras District Hospital on 13 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and helped to achieve the First Baby Friendly status.

Although I strive to get moms to breastfeed, I have a vast knowledge of formula feeding and is still the ideal person to contact when struggling to make a choice.

CONSULTING DIETITIAN

Obesity is in the increase in children and adults. Therefore I am involved in the education of school children. I often hold health talks at community-based programmes, schools, churches as well as Corporate events.

Consulting Dietitian for the food industry.
I am currently involved with the Medupi project as the consulting dietitian for LSS (Lephalale Site Services). I am involved in the costing, planning and cooking of the menus and recipes.

I take into consideration that South Africa is a country with cultural differences and that it is extremely important to consider all the stakeholders when planning meals for Institutions.

What to expect at your first appointment

The consultations usually consist of an assessment, planning the diet, evaluation and implementation.
In the first consultation, I will take a diet history, do a full assessment of the client's weight, height, fat percentage, medical background as well as family history. I interpret the information and give dietary guidelines accordingly. This usually takes an hour.

The 2019 rate according to The Board of Healthcare Funds is around R520.
The follow up / second consultation would be the Diet and Menu plan explained.
This takes more or less 30 minutes and the 2019 rate is about R240.

Frequent follow-up appointments are recommended as it remains difficult to manage these changes in the beginning by oneself. This depends on the individual.
It takes more or less 15 minutes and cost around R145.
I use medical aid tariffs and claim from the Medical aid if you have funds available.

Meet the dietitian

Nelia Jordan is trained in the science of nutrition and diet therapy. She uses effective nutritional management strategies, based upon current scientific evidence, to help individuals or groups to improve their health and work within a specified scope of practice and adhere to a code of ethics. She has to meet registration requirements, which includes participating in a continuing competency program and is routinely audited in order to maintain her annual practising certificate.

"I am married to my husband and have 2 children. I love chocolates like the next person. I have a normal family that enjoys Take-Aways and complains when they have to eat too many vegetables. I am familiar with the meaning of starting over and making healthy eating a lifestyle instead of a short-term commitment. I would not advertise myself as a brilliant cook, but I can cook mieliepap in 6 minutes in the microwave."

Look at what our clients had to say

"I had to make a plan about my heart health and diabetes after I was admitted to hospital. I went to Nelia Jordan, a well known friend. Nelia helped me to take my diabetes seriously.

With a good diet plan I got my blood sugar under control, I felt better and I started to lose weight. She has a positive attitude about life and taught me that this is a healthy habit and not something that I suffer from.

My stress levels came down as I controlled and monitored my sugar and my blood pressure."

Wilma

"Nelia taught me that a dietitian is not only about losing weight but about a healthy and happy lifestyle.

I learned about food, I understand food labels and what I am consuming. As the adage goes "we are what we eat". Nelia helped me to realise that."

Gabriel

"Things changed drastically after I saw Nelia about my Gluten allergy. Previously I suffered from many unrelated illnesses... fatigue, headaches and stomach pains which resulted in hospitalisation.

Nelia helped and educated me to change my eating habits as well as what I can eat and avoid for the Allergy.

Currently, I have energy, my headaches and stomach pains have disappeared and my skin condition improved. The plus is I lost weight."
